Bookling Bookling

Allgemeine Geschäftsbedingungen

Stand: 21. Oktober 2026

§ 2 Was Bookling ist

B. per E-Mail an info@niklaspape.de.

§ 10 Deine Texte

(1) Was du in Bookling schreibst, gehört dir.

§ 18 Streitbeilegung, anwendbares Recht, Schluss

Terms of service

Last updated: 21 October 2026. This is a translation for your convenience; the German version is legally binding.

§ 1 Scope and provider

(1) These terms of service apply to the use of Bookling, i.e. the website, the web app and the apps for iOS and Android, and to all subscriptions you take out for it.

(2) The provider and your contractual partner is Niklas Pape, Mengstraße 40, 23552 Lübeck, Germany, email info@niklaspape.de (“we”). Further details are in the legal notice.

(3) Bookling is offered to consumers and businesses. A consumer is anyone who enters into a contract for purposes that are predominantly outside their trade, business or profession (Section 13 of the German Civil Code, BGB). Rules that apply only to consumers are marked as such.

(4) Deviating terms of businesses do not apply, even if we do not expressly object to them.

§ 2 What Bookling is

(1) Bookling is a writing app for books. You write in chapters and scenes, plan characters, places and plot, set goals and can take your book with you as a file at any time.

(2) Bookling stores your books on your device first. If you use “On all devices”, we sync them through our server with end-to-end encryption. We cannot read them, and therefore cannot recover them if you lose your device code. We recommend making a regular backup via “My book as a file”.

(3) In addition there are community features (reading room, wish board) and the AI conversation partner Book Buddy. How we handle data is explained in the privacy policy.

§ 3 Plans and prices

(1) Bookling comes in three plans. The description shown in the app under “Plans” when you subscribe is decisive. In essence:

Free (€0)
One book and one journal with the basic features for writing, planning and revising, importing existing texts, export as a Word file, PDF and backup, three spell checks per day, reading the reading room and wish board. No time limit.
Bookling (€7 per month or €59 per year)
Unlimited books and series, all planning tools, every export format (including standard manuscript and e-book), sync on all devices with 2 GB of storage, full revision tools, unlimited spell checks, all rooms and mood images, sharing your own excerpts in the reading room, Book Buddy with 10 answers per month to get to know it.
Bookling Buddy (€11.99 per month or €99 per year)
Everything in “Bookling”, 5 GB of storage, plus Book Buddy with 500 answers per month.

(2) All prices are final prices including statutory VAT. If we show you a price in another currency, the amount shown at checkout applies.

(3) Unused Book Buddy answers expire at the end of the month. The number of answers limits the cost of the AI; we may pause Book Buddy temporarily if our monthly cost limit is reached and will tell you so in the app.

(4) When a subscription ends, you move to “Free”. Nothing is lost: all books remain readable and can be exported. You can then edit one book of your choice; sync across devices ends.

(5) We may change or reduce the scope of “Free” for the future at any time, or discontinue individual free features. What you have already written always stays on your device and can be exported.

(6) Where we offer it, you can add extra storage to a subscription. It runs with your subscription, is charged pro rata for the current billing period and can be removed under “My account”; there is no payout when you do.

§ 4 Account

(1) You can write without an account. You need an account for a subscription, the reading room, posting on the wish board and Book Buddy. You must be at least 16 to create an account.

(2) Each account belongs to one person. Use an email address only you can access, and keep sign-in links, device links and your device code secret. If you suspect someone else has access, sign out of all other devices under “My account” and let us know.

(3) You can delete your account at any time under “My account”. Because we cannot provide a subscription without an account, a running subscription ends immediately upon deletion; there is no refund for time already paid. If you still want to use the paid time, cancel the subscription in the customer portal first and delete the account after it has ended. Export your books first if you do not have all your devices with you.

§ 5 Conclusion of contract

(1) The presentation of plans on the website and in the app is not yet a binding offer.

(2) How to subscribe: in the app under “Plans” you choose a plan and billing (monthly or yearly) and are taken to the checkout page of our payment provider Stripe. There you enter your email address, billing details and payment method. Before submitting you see the plan, price, billing period, start and length of any trial once more, and can correct all entries or cancel via “Back”. By clicking the button that indicates the obligation to pay (such as “Subscribe” or “Subscribe and pay”), you make a binding offer to take out the subscription. At the same time you agree to these terms and expressly request that we begin performance immediately, i.e. before the withdrawal period ends (see the withdrawal notice).

(3) The contract is concluded when we activate your subscription. This normally happens immediately; you see it in the app and receive a confirmation by email with the contract details, these terms and the withdrawal notice.

(4) The contract languages are German and English. We do not store the contract text separately for you; the current terms are available here, the confirmation is in your inbox and your invoices are in Stripe’s customer portal.

§ 6 Trial

(1) For “Bookling” and “Bookling Buddy” we offer a free 14-day trial. To start it you add a payment method at checkout. You pay nothing during the trial.

(2) If you do not cancel before the trial ends, the chosen paid subscription starts automatically afterwards and your payment method is charged. We remind you by email before the trial ends. You can cancel at any time during the trial; the subscription then ends with the trial at no cost.

(3) The trial is available once per person. We may refuse or end a further trial immediately if the same person, the same email address (including variants) or the same payment method has already had a trial. The subscription then starts as a paid subscription right away; your right of withdrawal (§ 16) is not affected.

§ 7 Payment

(1) Payments are processed for us by Stripe Payments Europe, Ltd. The available payment methods (e.g. credit card, SEPA direct debit, PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay) are shown on the checkout page.

(2) The price is payable in advance for each billing period (month or year) and is collected at the start of each period. Your invoice is available in Stripe’s customer portal; on request we email it to you.

(3) If a payment fails, Stripe retries several times and we let you know. If payment is still outstanding after that, we may end the subscription; your account moves to “Free” and your books are kept (§ 3 (4)). The outstanding amount for the billing period already begun remains due.

(4) If you take out a subscription in an app through Apple’s App Store or Google Play, the respective store processes the payment. Payment, renewal, cancellation and refunds are then also governed by the store’s terms; refunds are decided solely by the store. You can cancel such a subscription in the subscription settings of your Apple or Google account.

§ 8 Term, changes and cancellation

(1) Monthly subscription: it runs for an indefinite period and renews for one month at a time. You can cancel at any time to the end of the current month.

(2) Yearly subscription: the first term is one year; the yearly price is payable in advance. During the first year you can cancel at any time to the end of that year. If you do not cancel, the subscription renews for another year each time after the first year; the yearly price is payable in advance at the start of each year. After the first renewal you can cancel at any time with one month’s notice. If you cancel a yearly subscription or end use early, the subscription continues until the end of the paid yearly period. There is no refund (neither full nor pro rata) for amounts already paid or unused periods. If you switch from monthly to yearly, a new first yearly term begins.

(3) How to cancel: in the app under “My account” → “Manage subscription” (Stripe’s customer portal), via the “Cancel contracts here” button on our website (no sign-in needed), or in text form, e.g. by email to info@niklaspape.de. We confirm every cancellation immediately by email, stating when it takes effect.

(4) Changing plans: if you move to a higher plan or from monthly to yearly billing, the new plan applies immediately; what you have already paid for the current period is credited against the new price and you pay the difference right away. If you move to a lower plan or to monthly billing, the change applies at the end of the current period. No change results in a payout.

(5) Cancellation by us: we may cancel a free account with one month’s notice, and a subscription with one month’s notice to the end of a billing period. Both parties’ right to terminate for good cause remains unaffected; good cause for us includes in particular a serious violation of § 11 or one repeated despite a warning. Before an account ends, you always have the opportunity to export your books.

(6) If we terminate for good cause for which you are responsible, for example a serious violation of § 11, the subscription ends immediately. We then keep the fee for the current billing period as damages, less any expenses we save as a result. You may prove that we suffered no damage or significantly less.

§ 9 Price changes

(1) We may change prices for new subscriptions at any time. Your running subscription keeps the agreed price.

(2) If we want to change the price of a running subscription, we will tell you the new price and the reason by email at least one month before the start of the billing period from which it should apply. If you agree, for example with one click in the email or in the app, the new price applies from then on. If you have not agreed by then, your subscription ends when the current billing period ends; the notice then also serves as our termination at that time. We point this out expressly in the notice. The previous price applies until the end.

(3) If the statutory VAT rate changes, we adjust the final price from the next billing period accordingly; reductions are passed on. For an increase, paragraph 2 applies.

§ 10 Your writing

(1) What you write in Bookling belongs to you. All rights in your texts, characters, notes and images remain with you.

(2) You grant us only the simple, non-transferable rights we technically need to run Bookling for you: storing your encrypted data and transferring it between your devices, and showing excerpts you share in the reading room to the members admitted there. These rights end when you delete the data or withdraw the excerpt. We do not use your writing to train any AI, do not use it for advertising and do not pass it on.

(3) You can export your books as a file at any time in every plan (at least as a Word file, PDF and backup), including after a subscription ends and before deleting your account.

§ 11 Reading room and wish board

(1) In the reading room you can show excerpts of your writing to other members and give feedback; on the wish board you can post wishes, vote and comment. The reading room rules also apply to both.

(2) You may only share content for which you hold the necessary rights, which usually means only your own writing. You are responsible for your content. Content that violates laws or the rights of others is prohibited, in particular copyright infringements, insults, threats, hate speech, depictions of child sexual abuse, violations of the personal rights of real people, and advertising. Pornographic content is also prohibited, even with the “18+” note. Content involving violence, sexuality, death or addiction is allowed if you mark it with the appropriate content notes; explicit sexual or violent scenes only with the “18+” note.

(3) You can report content via “Report”. We review reports promptly and decide carefully, objectively and proportionately. We may hide or remove content that violates these terms or the rules or is illegal, add content notes, and exclude members from the reading room and wish board temporarily or permanently for serious or repeated violations. In such cases we tell you what we did and why, and you can object by email; we will then review the decision again.

(4) Exclusion from the reading room or the wish board does not affect your subscription or your books; the subscription continues at the agreed price. For serious violations, § 8 (5) and (6) remain unaffected.

(5) There is no entitlement to have an excerpt or post shown or kept online.

§ 12 Book Buddy (AI)

(1) Book Buddy is a conversation partner based on artificial intelligence. It asks questions, offers prompts for thought and describes how scenes come across. It never writes into your book; an answer only ends up where you put it yourself as a note. Book Buddy is off by default and only works when you switch it on for a book and have agreed to the data transfer.

(2) Answers are generated automatically. What we owe is that Book Buddy is available within your allowance, not any particular result. Answers may be inaccurate, incomplete or wrong and do not replace professional advice, for example on legal, medical or publishing matters. We give no warranty that answers are correct, complete, suitable for your purposes or free of third-party rights. Whether and how you use a suggestion is your decision and your responsibility.

(3) We claim no rights to Book Buddy’s answers.

(4) Book Buddy must not be used to generate illegal content or to circumvent the model’s safeguards. The monthly allowance (§ 3) applies per account.

§ 13 Availability and development

(1) Writing itself works on your device even without internet. Sync, account, reading room, wish board, Book Buddy and spell check need a connection to our servers or our partners’ services. We strive for the highest possible availability but cannot guarantee uninterrupted access. We plan maintenance to cause as little disruption as possible.

(2) We keep developing Bookling. We may change or replace features, assign them to a different plan or discontinue individual features if there is a valid reason (e.g. security, changes in the law, technical progress, adapting to new devices, a partner service being discontinued or becoming more expensive, low usage), the change costs you nothing extra and we inform you clearly. If a change impairs your use more than insignificantly, we inform you by email at least 30 days in advance; as a consumer you may then end the contract free of charge within 30 days of the information or the change (Section 327r BGB). We do not change the core: that you can write your books and export them as a file.

§ 14 Defects

The statutory rights regarding defects apply, for consumers in particular Sections 327 et seq. BGB on digital products. We provide updates needed to keep Bookling in conformity with the contract, including security updates. Please let us know if something does not work.

§ 15 Liability

(1) We are liable without limitation for intent and gross negligence, for injury to life, body or health, under the German Product Liability Act and where we have given a guarantee.

(2) For slight negligence we are liable only if we breach an essential contractual obligation, i.e. one whose fulfilment makes proper performance of the contract possible in the first place and on which you may regularly rely. In that case liability is limited to the damage foreseeable and typical for the contract at the time it was concluded.

(3) Bookling stores your books primarily on your device. You are responsible for backing up your data, for example with regular backups via “My book as a file”; sync across devices is not a backup. For loss of data we are liable under paragraphs 1 and 2 only to the extent that it would also have occurred had you backed up regularly. We cannot recover data you delete on your device or in your browser.

(4) We do not owe any particular availability of our servers or our partners’ services (§ 13 (1)).

(5) If you use Bookling free of charge, we are liable, notwithstanding paragraph 2, only for intent and gross negligence; paragraph 1 remains unaffected.

(6) The above limitations also apply in favour of our vicarious agents.

§ 16 Right of withdrawal

As a consumer you have a statutory right of withdrawal when taking out a subscription. Details and the model withdrawal form are in the withdrawal notice.

§ 17 Changes to these terms

We may change these terms for the future, for example if laws, case law or Bookling’s features change. We notify you of changes for existing subscriptions by email at least one month in advance; they only apply if you agree. If you do not agree, the previous terms continue to apply and we may cancel the subscription with ordinary notice under § 8 (5). For free use, changed terms apply once you have agreed to them after the notice in the app and continue to use account features.

§ 18 Disputes, governing law, final provisions

(1) We are neither willing nor obliged to take part in dispute resolution proceedings before a consumer arbitration board. Write to us if something is wrong; we are happy to find a solution.

(2) The law of the Federal Republic of Germany applies, excluding the UN Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods. If you are a consumer habitually resident in another country, you keep the protection of the mandatory consumer protection laws of that country.

(3) If you are a merchant, a legal entity under public law or a special fund under public law, the place of jurisdiction is Lübeck.

(4) If any provision of these terms is invalid, the remaining provisions remain valid. The statutory provision takes the place of the invalid one.
