Datenschutzerklärung
Stand: 18. Oktober 2026
Kurz gesagt.
2. Was auf deinem Gerät bleibt

- Berichtigung unrichtiger Daten (Art. 16 DSGVO),
Privacy policy
Last updated: 18 October 2026. This is a translation for your convenience; the German version is legally binding.
In short. Your books live on your device. If you use them on several devices, we sync them with end-to-end encryption: we cannot read them. We show no ads, do not track you and set no cookies. Data only goes where you send it yourself: to the reading room when you share something, to Stripe when you pay, to Book Buddy when you switch it on and ask, and to the spell checker when you tap “Check”.
1. Controller
The controller responsible for processing personal data in Bookling (website, web app and apps) under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is:
Niklas PapeMengstraße 40
23552 Lübeck, Germany
Email: info@niklaspape.de
Phone: +49 176 404 715 28
Referred to below as “we”. We are not required to appoint a data protection officer. For any privacy question, reach us at the address above.
2. What stays on your device
Bookling is built so that you can write without an account. The app stores your books, chapters, scenes, versions, characters, notes, goals and images in your browser’s database (IndexedDB) or in the app’s storage on your device. This data does not reach us unless you switch on sync.
Bookling also keeps a few things in your browser’s storage (localStorage), such as your language, the look of the writing area, how you furnished your shelf and, if you have an account, your sign-in on this device. A service worker keeps the app available offline. All of this is strictly necessary for the service you explicitly use (Section 25 (2) no. 2 of the German TDDDG). We use no cookies and no analytics or advertising tools.
You can delete this data at any time by clearing your browser’s site data or removing the app. Careful: without sync and without a backup, your books are then gone. Make a backup first via “My book as a file”.
3. Website, app and servers
The website, web app and API run on Cloudflare (Cloudflare, Inc., 101 Townsend St., San Francisco, CA 94107, USA). Cloudflare delivers the files from data centres near you, protects against attacks and runs our database. Where Cloudflare offers it, the database is located in the European Union.
With every request Cloudflare processes technically necessary data: IP address, time, requested address, amount of data transferred, browser identifier (user agent) and referrer. We use API logs only to detect errors and abuse; they are deleted after 7 days at most. To prevent overload we limit the number of requests per IP address; the IP address is briefly counted in memory for this.
The legal basis is our legitimate interest in secure and stable operation (Art. 6 (1) (f) GDPR) and, where you use Bookling under a contract, Art. 6 (1) (b) GDPR. We have a data processing agreement with Cloudflare (Art. 28 GDPR) including the EU Standard Contractual Clauses. Cloudflare, Inc. is also certified under the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework (adequacy decision of the European Commission, Art. 45 GDPR).
Apps from the App Store and Google Play
You get the apps for iPhone, iPad and Android from Apple’s App Store (Apple Distribution International Ltd., Hollyhill Industrial Estate, Cork, Ireland) and Google Play (Google Ireland Limited, Gordon House, Barrow Street, Dublin 4, Ireland). For downloads, updates, ratings and any crash reports you allow there, Apple and Google process data as independent controllers under their own privacy policies; we only receive aggregated, non-personal statistics. The apps contain no advertising, analytics or tracking components and otherwise process the same data as the web app. Subscriptions are taken out on our website via Stripe, not through Apple or Google.
4. Fonts
For a calm typeface, the website and app load the fonts Literata and Inter from Google Fonts (Google Ireland Limited, Gordon House, Barrow Street, Dublin 4, Ireland). Google receives your IP address and which font was requested; Google Fonts sets no cookies. A transfer to Google LLC in the USA is possible; Google LLC is certified under the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in a consistent, legible presentation (Art. 6 (1) (f) GDPR). The app stores the fonts on your device after the first load.
5. On all devices (sync)
When you switch on “On all devices”, Bookling creates a device code on your device. From this code your device derives the key that encrypts your books before upload (AES-GCM). Neither the key nor the code ever leaves your device in plain form; our server only knows an irreversible hash of the code as the name of your storage space.
The server therefore only holds: encrypted records, for each record its type (e.g. scene, chapter), a random identifier and the time of the change, and the amount of storage used. We cannot read the content of your books. Anyone who knows your device code can open your books; treat it like a password.
The legal basis is the performance of the contract (Art. 6 (1) (b) GDPR). The data is kept as long as you use sync. When you stop syncing or delete your account, we delete the storage space. Spaces that no device has accessed for twelve months are deleted after prior notice in the app.
6. Account and sign-in
You need an account for the reading room, the wish board, Book Buddy and a subscription. There is no password: you sign in with a link we email you, or with a device link from a device where you are already signed in.
For this we process: email address, name (as you enter it, a pen name is fine), language, your confirmation that you are at least 16, who invited you, when the account was created, your plan and subscription status, whether you already had a trial, and for each signed-in device a session with the time of last use and a rough device label (e.g. “Safari on iPhone”) derived from the browser identifier. Sign-in and session keys are stored only as hashes.
To grant the free trial only once per person, we also store a normalised form of your email address (e.g. without dots and suffixes for Gmail addresses) and a hash of the payment method identifier that Stripe gives us (see Section 9).
The legal basis is the performance of the contract (Art. 6 (1) (b) GDPR); for protection against repeated trials, our legitimate interest in preventing abuse (Art. 6 (1) (f) GDPR). Sessions end after 180 days at most, sign-in links after 20 minutes. We delete your account data when you delete your account (Section 19). Only the two trial-protection identifiers are kept afterwards, as hashes, for at most 24 months, so that a trial cannot be repeated by deleting and re-creating an account.
7. Reading room
In the reading room you can show excerpts of your writing to other members and get feedback. Unlike your books, these excerpts are stored unencrypted on our server, because others are meant to read them. We store the excerpt with its title, your content notes, the time, your member name, and comments and reactions from other members. Reading room members can see your name and the excerpts you share.
When you report content, we store the report with the reason you give, the reported content and your account so that we can review it; the person reported does not learn who reported them. When you block someone, we store whom you no longer want to see. We review reported content to decide whether to remove it (moderation).
The legal basis is the performance of the contract (Art. 6 (1) (b) GDPR), for moderation also our legal obligation under the EU Digital Services Act (Art. 6 (1) (c) GDPR) and our legitimate interest in a safe community (Art. 6 (1) (f) GDPR). Excerpts are kept until you withdraw them or delete your account. We keep reports for up to six months after they are resolved, to recognise repeated abuse.
Please do not share information about other real people in the reading room if they would not want it published. Rules: Reading room rules.
8. Wish board
Anyone can read on the wish board what others would like Bookling to have. With an account you can post wishes, vote and comment. We store the text, the time, your votes and the link to your account. Your account name appears next to your wishes and comments. Reports are handled as in the reading room (Section 7). The legal basis is Art. 6 (1) (b) GDPR (you use a Bookling feature) and our legitimate interest in developing Bookling according to what writers want (Art. 6 (1) (f) GDPR). When you delete your account we delete your votes; your wishes and comments stay without your name and without any link to you so that the conversation still makes sense to others. On request we delete them completely.
9. Subscription and payment (Stripe)
When you subscribe, we send you to Stripe’s checkout page (Stripe Payments Europe, Limited, 1 Grand Canal Street Lower, Grand Canal Dock, Dublin, D02 H210, Ireland). You enter your payment details (e.g. card number, IBAN, PayPal account) directly with Stripe; we neither see nor store them.
Stripe processes your email address, name, country or billing address (for the correct VAT), payment details, device information and IP address (also for fraud prevention). From Stripe we receive: a customer number, plan, term, trial status, whether a payment method is on file, payment status and invoices, and a technical identifier of your payment method (fingerprint), which we store only as a hash to recognise a second trial with the same payment method. In Stripe’s customer portal you can change your plan, replace your payment method, download invoices and cancel.
Legal bases: performance of the contract (Art. 6 (1) (b) GDPR), statutory retention duties (Art. 6 (1) (c) GDPR together with Section 147 of the German Fiscal Code and Section 257 of the German Commercial Code) and our legitimate interest in preventing fraud and trial abuse (Art. 6 (1) (f) GDPR). We keep invoices and accounting records for as long as tax and commercial law requires (currently eight or ten years).
Stripe processes some payment data as an independent controller (for example for fraud prevention and its own legal duties). This may involve a transfer to Stripe, Inc. in the USA; Stripe, Inc. is certified under the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework, and Standard Contractual Clauses apply as well. More: Stripe’s privacy policy.
Decision without a human: if we detect a payment method that already had a trial on another account, the new trial ends immediately and automatically and the subscription starts normally. If you think this happened wrongly, write to us: we review the case personally and can correct the decision.
10. Book Buddy (AI)
Book Buddy is an AI conversation partner that asks you questions and offers prompts for thought. It is off by default. You switch it on for each book separately; the first time, we ask for your consent.
What is sent: only what you leave selected for each question: your question, if you wish the current scene (shortened to the first 6,000 characters), the core sentence and turning points of your plot, the profiles of the characters who appear in the scene, and the conversation so far. You can deselect each part before sending.
Where to: our server forwards the request to Amazon Bedrock, a service of Amazon Web Services EMEA SARL (38 Avenue John F. Kennedy, L-1855 Luxembourg), in the Frankfurt am Main region (eu-central-1). There a language model made by Anthropic writes the answer. The model runs on AWS infrastructure; Anthropic does not receive your texts. We only allow requests within the EU.
What is stored: AWS does not store questions, book material or answers and does not use them to train models. Neither do we: the conversation lives only in your browser’s memory and is gone after a reload, unless you explicitly keep an answer as a note in your book. On our server we only log that you asked: time, type of question, a random book identifier and the number of text units (tokens) processed, to count your monthly allowance and our costs. We delete this log after twelve months or when you delete your account. The only exception: if you report a Book Buddy answer as inappropriate, we store that answer with your reason (without your question and without your book material) to review it and improve Book Buddy; we delete the report after six months.
The legal basis is your consent (Art. 6 (1) (a) GDPR), and for the log also the performance of the contract (Art. 6 (1) (b) GDPR). You can withdraw your consent at any time with effect for the future: by switching Book Buddy off in your books and withdrawing consent under “My account”, or by emailing us. This does not affect the lawfulness of processing before the withdrawal.
Please do not give Book Buddy information about real people who have nothing to do with your story, and no health data or other particularly sensitive information about yourself or others that you do not want to share. AI answers can be wrong (see the terms of service).
11. Spell check (LanguageTool)
The spelling and grammar check never runs automatically, only when you click it. Your browser then sends the text of the current scene (in chunks of at most 20,000 characters) and the language directly to the LanguageTool service (LanguageTooler GmbH, Potsdam, Germany). LanguageTool also receives your IP address. According to the provider, checked texts are not stored after the check. More: LanguageTool’s privacy policy.
The legal basis is the performance of the contract (Art. 6 (1) (b) GDPR), as you explicitly request the check. If you do not want to send your text, simply do not use the check; all other hints in revision mode are calculated by Bookling on your device.
12. Anonymous error reports
If an unexpected error occurs in the app, Bookling sends a short technical report to our server: type of error, error message (passages in quotation marks are removed first), the affected place in the program code and the app version. The report contains no account identifier and no book content. As with every request, Cloudflare processes the IP address (Section 3). Reports end up in the server logs and are deleted after 7 days at most. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in finding and fixing errors before they put texts at risk (Art. 6 (1) (f) GDPR).
13. Waitlist
When you join the waitlist on the home page, we store your email address, chosen language, the time and the page you came from. We use it to write to you when Bookling opens to everyone and, if applicable, about an introductory offer for the waitlist. After that we do not use the address any further.
The legal basis is your consent (Art. 6 (1) (a) GDPR), which you give by signing up. You can withdraw it at any time via the link in each of our emails or with a short message to us; we then delete your address immediately. We delete the waitlist no later than twelve months after launch.
14. Abuse protection (Cloudflare Turnstile)
We protect forms such as the waitlist and account creation against automated sign-ups with Cloudflare Turnstile. Turnstile checks technical characteristics of your browser and connection in the background (e.g. IP address, browser identifier, page load behaviour) without puzzles and without advertising or tracking cookies. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in protecting our services from abuse (Art. 6 (1) (f) GDPR); reading these characteristics is strictly necessary for the service you request (Section 25 (2) no. 2 TDDDG). The provider is Cloudflare (Section 3).
15. Emails from Bookling
We only send emails that belong to your use of Bookling: sign-in links, invitations, notices about your subscription (e.g. trial ending, invoice available, subscription ending) and the confirmation when you delete your account. We send them with Cloudflare Email Service (Section 3). The legal basis is Art. 6 (1) (b) GDPR. We only send newsletters with your consent.
16. When you write to us
If you email us, we process your address and message to reply (Art. 6 (1) (b) or (f) GDPR). We delete the conversation once your request is resolved and no retention duty applies.
17. Service providers and transfers abroad
We do not sell data or pass it on for advertising. The following providers process data on our behalf (Art. 28 GDPR) or as independent controllers:
| Provider | Purpose | Location, safeguard |
|---|---|---|

| Amazon Web Services EMEA SARL | Book Buddy (Amazon Bedrock, Frankfurt region) | Luxembourg, processing in Germany; data processing agreement with Standard Contractual Clauses (parent company in the USA, Data Privacy Framework) |
| LanguageTooler GmbH | Spell check on click | Germany |
| Apple Distribution International Ltd., Google Ireland Limited | App distribution (App Store, Google Play), independent controllers | Ireland; transfers to the USA under their privacy policies |
| Google Ireland Limited | Fonts (Google Fonts) | Ireland; possible transfer to Google LLC (USA) under the Data Privacy Framework |
Data is only transferred outside the EU where an adequate level of protection has been established (Art. 45 GDPR, e.g. the Data Privacy Framework) or appropriate safeguards exist (Art. 46 GDPR, Standard Contractual Clauses). You can request a copy of the safeguards from us.

19. Deleting your account and data
You can delete your account yourself at any time: in the app under “My account” → “Delete account”; to confirm you enter your email address. We then cancel any running subscription with Stripe and immediately delete your account, sessions, reading room excerpts, votes, Book Buddy log and sync space. The only exception is data we are legally required to keep (invoices); we block it from any other use. If you can no longer reach the app, email us from your account address at info@niklaspape.de and we will delete it for you within 30 days at the latest. Step by step: Delete your account.
Your books on your devices are not affected. They are with you.
20. Your rights
You have the right to
- access the data we process about you (Art. 15 GDPR),
- rectification of inaccurate data (Art. 16 GDPR),
- erasure (Art. 17 GDPR),
- restriction of processing (Art. 18 GDPR),
- data portability (Art. 20 GDPR): you can take your books with you as a file at any time (“My book as a file”),
- withdraw consent with effect for the future (Art. 7 (3) GDPR).
Right to object (Art. 21 GDPR): where we process data on the basis of our legitimate interest (Art. 6 (1) (f) GDPR), you may object at any time on grounds relating to your particular situation. We will then stop, unless we can demonstrate compelling legitimate grounds that override your interests, or the processing serves the establishment, exercise or defence of legal claims.
Just send us an email. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority (Art. 77 GDPR), for example where you live or with the authority responsible for us: Unabhängiges Landeszentrum für Datenschutz Schleswig-Holstein, Holstenstraße 98, 24103 Kiel, Germany, www.datenschutzzentrum.de.
21. Minimum age
You can use an account, the reading room and Book Buddy from the age of 16. You confirm your age when creating the account. Content marked “18+” is only shown to members who have stated that they are adults. If we learn that an account was created by a younger person, we delete it.
22. Other
Obligation to provide data: you do not have to give us any data. Without an email address we cannot set up an account, and without payment details you cannot subscribe.
Automated decisions: apart from the trial protection described in Section 9, we make no automated decisions and do not profile you.
Changes: when Bookling changes, we update this policy. The current version is always here; we will let you know in the app about significant changes.
